The cardinales team wins the “Slowpitch Playing for Refuge” championship
Around 150 people took part in this Family Day, which was held at the facilities of the Ciudad Deportiva Amaya sports club in Pamplona and which was attended by the director general for Migration Policies, Patricia Ruiz de Irizar; the manager of the Miguel Induráin Foundation, Ernesto Modrego; Álvaro Hurtado, CEO of Zucami; Arantxa Rubio, the head of Social Action at CaixaBank in Navarre; Pablo Naballas, the Manager of C.D. Amaya; Pablo Carpio, the president of the Baseball and Softball Federation of Navarre; and Adrián Laurencena, the head of the “Playing For Refuge” project.
The opening speech to welcome attendees was followed by the finals of the ‘Slowpitch Playing for Refuge’ championship, organised by the Baseball and Softball Federation of Navarre and which began in April this year with the participation of four teams from Navarre, including the Cardinales team, primarily made up of players with refugee status in our country. This championship, which took place amid a great atmosphere, concluded with the surprising yet well-deserved victory of the Cardinales team, followed by Arga Ducks, Arga Frogs and Toros. The honorary first pitch to mark the start of the event was made by the representatives of the Navarre clubs, who have actively collaborated in the championship: Javier González Tabar, on behalf of Arga; Urko Gutiérrez, on behalf of Amaya-Jesuitinas; and Iñaki Alfonso, on behalf of Toros de Pamplona.
What is more, all participants in the event were offered the opportunity to make use of a batting machine installed at the club by the Navarre Federation and, before the great final, a home run contest was held.
The event ended with prize giving and a meal for all participants, including a raffle for promotional material from the project.
